Cessna - Green Way to Business

Cessna is working with customers, suppliers, industry groups and government authorities in a variety of capacities, from studying fuel alternatives to partnering with engine manufacturers and providing operational guidance for aircraft owners

Carbon dioxide emissions from all of aviation represent only about two per cent of total CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels, and general aviation is a fraction of this number. Even so, while aviation has established an outstanding track record in reducing its environmental impact, Cessna recognises there is much more that must be done, as in the aviation industry economic and environmental goals converge: the market demands efficiency.

The company is focusing on the efficient operation of Cessna aircraft within the company and by aircraft owners and operators. This process also includes the incorporation of environment-friendly technologies and features into the product line. Cessna is working with customers, suppliers, industry groups and government authorities in a variety of capacities, from studying fuel alternatives to partnering with engine manufacturers and providing operational guidance for aircraft owners.

For example, Cessna was the first general aviation manufacturer to offer flight planning software to optimise flight profiles for time, cost, or for the lowest carbon footprint. Called Green-Trak, the software uses a process known as cost indexing to minimise total trip cost for our Citation business jet operators by balancing the costs of direct operation, fuel burn and carbon emissions.

Another innovation currently in development is an electric propulsion system for the Cessna 172 Skyhawk. Cessna has delivered more than 43,000 of these single-engine piston-powered airplanes, more than any other general aviation aircraft. The company has teamed with Beyond Aviation (formerly Bye Energy), an integrator of clean, alternative energy technologies for business and general aviation aircraft. The potential benefits are encouraging for this electric powerplant.
